For this project, I first picked a color palette to represented the year 2020 and then created an illustration that used these specific colors. My new “2020 is the Devil” Palette is designed to evoke feelings of dread related to the catastrophic events of that year. This work is influenced by Sailor Jerry’s tattoo flash. I redesigned one of the devil heads he had drawn to create a new image representing the chaos happening throughout society. The colors work together to create an evil image representing the devil’s appearance.

The cherub is one of my favorite subjects that is often depicted in the world of tattooing. Even though tattooing was originally viewed as body art for outsiders and criminals, I find it interesting that biblical iconography has still made its way into this art form. I used a monochromatic color scheme ranging from black to white to portray the cherub in a darker light. The cherub is depicted with a somber look on his face to signify his loss of innocence. Also, the feathers in his wings look like spider webs to portray a process of decay.

I took inspiration from Bert Grimm's traditional tattoo style when creating these hearts. The emotions of the hearts allude to the comedy and tragedy masks used in theatre.

The rose signifies concepts such as love, new beginnings, and hope. It represents the beauty of life with its soft appearance, as well as the negatives in life with its thorns. People experience many trials in life, but as long as they continue pushing through, their life's work will be as beautiful as a rose.

The eagle is a popular symbol representative of America. Building initially on a black and white monochromatic color scheme, I added colors, such as yellow and red, to brighten the image. I used white-to-gray color gradients to add shading to the wings. Other parts of the wings and the body are completely black to contrast with the lighter colors used. The eagle is a symbol that represents strength and power. It is a powerful symbol that I enjoy in Traditional American tattooing, but to clarify, I am not using this work to justify the wrongdoings systematically implemented by American society.
